Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Concerts Society - Background
The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Concerts Society was established in the 1960s soon after the opening of the Cathedral to promote musical and cultural events at the Cathedral.
Cardinal John Heenan, whilst Archbishop of Liverpool and the man behind the realisation of the cathedral plans, had expressed the wish that the Cathedral should become a centre in the City of Liverpool for arts and culture. To this end he was responsible for the foundation of the Cathedral Choir, a Choir School and the installation of a notable pipe organ. Following the establishment of the Cantata Choir in the 60s, the Orchestra was formed in 1982 and from the outset the aim was for it to take part in both the Cathedral’s concert season and in its major services and to perform music which was not otherwise heard on Merseyside. Although the orchestra has developed considerably since its inception, these are still its basic aims today |
Today's Concerts Society is managed by a small committee of dedicated volunteers who are elected by the choir and orchestra paid-up members at each year's annual general meeting.
As a registered charity, The Society is financially independent of the Cathedral itself, and its funding comes from income raised by its concerts, as well as from Members and Friends subscriptions, sponsorship, and other fund raising activities. Volunteers We are always on the lookout for more volunteers to help with front of house, selling programmes and serving refreshments to name just a few things that ensure the smooth running of our events. NEXT SEASON
We begin our new season with a change.
From October 2022 the Orchestra will be renamed the HOPE METROPOLITAN ORCHESTRA and will be based at the creative campus of Liverpool Hope University on Shaw Street, Liverpool L6 1HP.
Find out all about this exciting venue and its great facilities at their website https://www.hope.ac.uk/lifeathope/ourcampuses/creativecampus/
This move will strengthen the ties between these two important organisations in the city - the Metropolitan Cathedral and Hope University - and we are proud to form one strand in the bridge between them.
Another big moment will be our return to the Cathedral in time for our Christmas concert 2022.
This will enable us to welcome back children’s choirs and almost limitless audience numbers in this 2,500 seater venue.
Tonight’s conductor David Lewis has been our Christmas conductor for some years now and we always delight in his enthusiasm and engagement. We do hope you will stay with us and join us at these two places. We are not abandoning St Bride’s, though, and will be back here in May 2023.
Below, please find a brief overview of what we hope the season will look like.
